Friends of Asian Art

The Friends of Asian Art plays a leading and active role in developing the Asian art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, one of the most rapidly growing collections in the Museum. Patrons enjoy lectures and private cocktail receptions to meet curators, scholars, dealers, and artists. Members also participate in exclusive viewings of exhibitions, collections, and behind-the-scenes tours and have opportunities for international, curator-led travel. A high point of the year is the annual seated dinner where Friends of Asian Art members vote to select ancient and contemporary masterpieces to be acquired for the Museum’s collection.

Since the founding of the group in 2003, it has sponsored innovative programming and fostered an increased interest in Asian art. In recent years, the Museum has dedicated new space in the Caroline Wiess Law Building through the opening of several permanent galleries: the Arts of Korea Gallery (2007), the Glassell Collection of Indonesian Gold (2008), the Nidhika and Pershant Mehta Arts of India Gallery (2009), the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery (2010), and the Arts of Japan Gallery (2012). The Asian galleries showcase a new model of exhibiting ancient and contemporary art from Asia. This represents the Museum’s long-term plans for collection development, interpretation, and exhibition of art from Asia. With so many exciting opportunities available, now is the time to join the Friends of Asian Art.

Past program highlights include:

  • Lunch and demonstration with Japanese artist and metalsmith Shota Suzuki
  • An evening of Ikebana at a private collectors’ home, including demonstration and cocktail reception
  • Guest Lecture and Reception: Eric Zetterquist on Vietnamese Ceramics
