We often get questions about the suitability of the Oscar-nominated shorts for younger viewers—so please note that this year’s Animated program has a PG rating. It’s recommended for ages 8 & older because several of the films cover difficult topics. The Live-Action and Documentary programs are Rated R. Who chooses the nominees?

“Monet and the Seine” Brings an Icy Wonderland to Houston
Jan 2, 2015 - The Thaw at Vétheuil In this particularly powerful painting, Monet’s treatment of the ice floes in the foreground looks ahead to his famous Water Lilies. He set up his easel—and a coal-heated stove for warmth—along the Seine and proceeded to capture the glistening winter landscape. Ice Floes Monet revisited his icy theme when the Seine froze again during the winter of 1892, as seen in this depiction of the river’s surface, glassy and mirrorlike—a reminder of Monet’s passion for its reflective qualities.

Celebrating Community: Women’s Empowerment Group Visits the MFAH
May 13, 2020 - Art plays an important role in trauma recovery, and the connection with the MFAH is a positive presence in the lives of our refugee community. What were some highlights of the visit? Then our docent, Vehista Kaikobad, fascinated the group with anecdotes about the art we saw along the way in the Beck Building galleries. Artist Mary Cassatt was particularly interesting for the group. Refugee women can lack the confidence to visit public institutions alone, especially when they haven’t yet mastered English.
