  2. Paint the USA: A Time Line of “Mexican Modernism” Artists in America

Jul 26, 2017 - In the 1920s and 1930s, Mexico captivated the United States, as both an ancient wellspring of culture and a source of sensational new artistic developments. José Clemente Orozco departs for New York. At Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1934, Orozco completes The Epic of American Civilization—a mural which Houston audiences can now see digitally re-created in the galleries of Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910

  3. The MFAH is the final venue for the acclaimed “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power”

Feb 10, 2020 - SpiralThe exhibition opens with the work of the Spiral group, a New York–based collective of 15 artists who formed in response to the August 1963 March on Washington, which drew nearly a quarter of a million people and marked “This new section contributes to a more comprehensive representation of Black American art during the same era, and celebrates an important legacy of art making in Texas.” “The new aesthetic was based on ‘rhythm,’ ‘shine ... the rich luster of a just-washed ’fro...’ and ‘Color color Color color that shines, color that is free of rules and regulations.”

  4. Teamwork Saves a Great Work of Art for Houston’s Future

Aug 22, 2019 - It’s a great way of supporting the greater community. You wanted to do a little extra for if you could. When you went to take a look that afternoon, what was the condition of the mural? It was really in a sad state. The entire wall was saturated from a leak in the roof, and the mortar itself was becoming very soft. It has been a hub of education and community spirit. Generations of young women have seen this mural and have been empowered, too. It was just the right thing to do. It’s a great work of art.

  5. Dangerous Curves: A “Sculpted in Steel” Chat with Ken Gross

Mar 30, 2016 - The formula for sensuality included a long hood, a small cabin (just two seats), a rakish tail, and lots of curves. Just look at a Delahaye 135MS for proof. Some of these cars have been compared to the lovely shape of a woman’s body, or even a Paris gown on wheels. Many of these cars on display were designed to be sensual, aesthetically arousing, impactful, and, if you will, a bit outrageous.

  6. Bayou Bend at 50: A Longtime Docent Tells Her Story

Mar 3, 2016 - I asked her about her memories of the day, how she became a docent, and more. You were a brand-new “class of 1966” Bayou Bend docent. How exciting that you attended the opening celebrations! Albert Sack, the famous New York antiques dealer, was literally under a table in Philadelphia Hall, pointing out to someone the thickness of the wood. I know it is a rigorous, multi-month course. The interview was one-on-one with the new curator, David Warren, who was just out of graduate school. I was scared to death as I climbed the house stairs to his office.

  7. Need to Know: 3 Things about “A History of Photography”

Jan 27, 2015 - When curator Malcolm Daniel came to the MFAH from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art about a year ago, he couldn’t wait to share those treasures in a new light. The result? The exhibition series A History of Photography: Selections from the Museum’s Collection, which offers a new snapshot of the collection every few months. The first rotation is on view now. Enjoy the View 1) Leading off the installation is View of Paris, a new acquisition that is also the earliest image in the collection.

  8. More than a Replica: The “Guernica” Tapestry Comes to Houston

Feb 18, 2013 - Rockefeller went on to serve as governor of New York and U.S. vice president. The late Nelson A. Rockefeller, a longtime friend of Picasso’s and a collector of the artist’s work, purchased one of the three tapestries in 1955. One of the attractions in the town of Guernica is a tile version of the painting on a wall. Large crowds continue to flock to view the original painting in the museum gallery in Madrid.

  9. Shōgun: A Director’s Perspective | Episode 8 “The Abyss of Life”

The sci-fi thriller was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and is rated “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Osei-Kuffour’s other credits include The Midnight Club, The Recruit, and Star Trek Discovery. A standby line will be available for guests who arrive without tickets. The MFAH presents A Director’s Perspective with Houston filmmaker Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour and a screening of Episode 8, “The Abyss of Life,” from the acclaimed 2024 TV series Shōgun.
