Film Screening + Q&A | “Harry Bertoia: Master of Metal”
See the new documentary Harry Bertoia: Master of Metal. The one-hour film features in-depth interviews and archival footage of artist Harry Bertoia playing his sound sculptures. The screening and Q&A take place in Lynn Wyatt Theater in the Kinder Building. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The screening is followed by a Q&A with Celia Bertoia, the artist’s daughter; and Elizabeth Essner, the Windgate Foundation Associate Curator of Craft. The 60 works highlighted in this presentation represent some of the varied themes in the Marvins collection, including portraits by A. A. E. A Photographer’s Collection celebrates the gift and promised gift to the Museum of more than 400 photographs from the collection of Michael Marvins and his wife, Michele. Michael Marvins is a fourth-generation, Houston-based photographer whose experience as an award-winning landscape and portrait photographer has given him an insider’s perspective on the medium’s history and technique.

Happy Birthday, Xul Solar: A Closer Look at the Argentinean Artist’s Work
Dec 14, 2018 - From the beginning, the artist desired to “found a new religion on my art and create a world for my followers,” as he wrote in his personal journal in 1912. This new world led the artist to create his own language: Neo-Creole. A fusion of Portuguese and Spanish, Neo-Creole also incorporated English, French, German, Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit roots. A new writing system accompanied the language, which he deemed as magical and perfect. Xul chose Neo-Creole to communicate in his daily life, and he was driven increasingly by astrology and other occult traditions.
