  4. Elegance and Refinement: The Still-Life Paintings of Willem van Aelst

    Elegance and Refinement is an unprecedented exhibition of more than 25 paintings that celebrate the exquisite work of a neglected master who had a significant impact on late-17th-century still-life painting. Born and trained in Delft, he spent most of his life in Amsterdam, but his paintings were forever transformed by the 10 years he spent abroad as a youth—first in France and then in Florence, at the Medici court.

    Jun 11, 2025 - Lending historical and visual context to these remarkable artworks in Houston will be a re-creation of a section of Trajan’s Column—a towering pillar with a spiraling narrative frieze that is one of the few monumental sculptures A soldier-emperor, he was the second of the so-called “Five Good Emperors” of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty; his military and imperial successes launched him to popular fame. “This is truly a rare opportunity for U.S. audiences to experience spectacular objects from this glorious era of the Roman Empire,” commented Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams chair of the MFAH.
