  4. "2026 Core Exhibition" Opening Reception

    Wells; and Warren A. Hadler.  Ronald A. Logan; McClain Gallery; Karen S. Pulaski;and The Arch and Stella Rowan Foundation, Inc.   It marks the first public presentation of work produced during their residency and offers a snapshot of current work—ideas tested, materials explored, and questions sharpened through sustained time and support.

    The rebellious Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), born and raised a slave, is sold to gladiator trainer Batiatus (Peter Ustinov). After weeks of being trained to kill for the arena, Spartacus turns on his owners and leads the other slaves in a revolt against the Roman Republic. A standout from the “Swords and Sandals” genre of movie epics, this film complements the exhibition Art and Life in Imperial Rome: Trajan and His Times.

    Over decades, Thomas composed a collection of objects from flea markets, tour stops, and gifts from his children. Each piece is stitched into a larger quilt of futurism, reverence, and timeless reflection. A short film—written by Solange Knowles and directed by Nuotama Bodomo—anchors this film series featuring visual works exploring Black domesticity, the sacred nature of collections, and the stories held within the objects we keep

  7. “Miss Ima Hogg & Modernism”

    Jul 23, 2019 - However, prior to this, Miss Hogg made a less-known but significant gift to the Museum of early 20th-century modern European and North American prints and drawings. The Museum will showcase a selection of these works on paper. Miss Hogg was one of the first American collectors of Modern art in Texas when avant-garde art was still generally misunderstood. This exhibition marks the 80th anniversary of Miss Hogg’s first significant gift of early 20th-century works on paper in 1939 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston—a donation that she would continue throughout the next decade.

  8. “American Modern: Works from the Collection of Alice C. Simkins”

    Mar 19, 2015 - Simkins is a leading supporter of the arts in San Antonio and Houston. Curated by Alison de Lima Greene, curator of contemporary art and special projects, the exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She first began collecting in the mid-1970s and has consistently brought a scholar’s eye to this project across four decades, seeking out examples that illuminate the most innovative moments in artists’ careers.
