Fire/Works: Enamel Art through the Centuries
The process of enameling has captivated artists and collectors for 1,000 years. Enamel is a form of glass that is mixed with metallic oxides for color and applied to a metal or glass base through the act of firing at high temperatures. Renowned Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé revived enamel techniques in the late 19th century, and in the 20th century, industry used enamel for its durability.

On public display for the first time, this exquisite collection of 20th-century Latin American art has been on long-term loan to the MFAH for several years and has undergone extensive research by curators and conservators. National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Three Decades of West Coast Ceramics, 1956–1986 is presented in conjunction with the 2013 NCECA conference, held in Houston. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, installs “Portal” by Do Ho Suh, an “impossible” sculpture made from the negative form of a traditional Korean gate
Feb 6, 2024 - In the years of reconstruction that followed, Do Ho Suh’s father, Suh Se Ok, himself an artist renowned for his ink paintings, built a home for his family with a classical entry portal based on an 18th-century gate. The MFAH is also home to the Glassell School of Art, with its Core Residency Program and Junior and Studio schools; and the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA), a leading research institute for 20th-century Suh is best known for his fabric sculptures that reconstruct to scale his past and present homes and studios in Korea, Rhode Island, Berlin, London, and New York.
