    Mar 8, 2023 - Enchanted by the painting, Pearlman made a successful bid for the work—View of Céret (1921–22), on view in this exhibition—and that first purchase triggered a passion for collecting that endured for the rest of his life. The MFAH is also home to the Glassell School of Art, with its Core Residency Program and Junior and Studio schools; and the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA), a leading research institute for 20th-century Pearlman met with him there in 1948, and sat for his portrait, which is presented here, as is Lipchitz’s 1952 portrait bust of the collector.

    In 1973 Kenji Nakahashi gave up his brief career in design and left his native Japan for New York City, where he lived and worked until his death. Although best known for his photo-based Conceptual art, Nakahashi (1947–2017) moved fluidly between mediums, experimenting with painting, drawing, and printmaking, in addition to photography.
