Sculptor Joseph Havel to Retire as Director, the Glassell School of Art
Nov 9, 2021 - “I now plan to devote my full energy towards my artistic practice, leaving a strong foundation for the new director.” The Museum will initiate an international search for a successor later this year. In 2013 Havel was named a Texas State Visual Artist by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The school’s Core program—a residency originally for artists that, under Havel, expanded in 1998 to include writers, as well—has become a renowned center for artistic experimentation and emerging artists and critics.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to Open Its Steven Holl–Designed Nancy and Rich Kinder Building on November 1, 2020
Jan 15, 2020 - The trapezoidal concrete Kinder Building is clad in vertical glass tubes that will emit a soft glow at night in a pattern across its facades. Steven Holl Architects designed the master plan for the redevelopment, along with the Kinder Building and a new home for the Glassell School of Art. In celebration of the opening, the Museum will offer free general admission to all three of its Sarofim Campus gallery buildings for a full week, November 1 through 8, 2020.

The playfulness, however, belies a more somber tone, indirectly referencing or invoking collective suffering while creating a renewed awareness of the social and political realities it addresses. Children up to 35 months old, and an adult caregiver, are invited to enjoy a multi-sensory experience in the galleries.

Jul 19, 2019 - In 1913, Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell, two American expatriate artists living in Paris, introduced a new mode of abstraction they called Synchromism. principle within an abstract composition—with the goal of producing a visceral, nonverbal, or even spiritual response that transcended the physical. Color as Rhythm In Synchromy (below), Russell arranged brilliant, subtly modulated colors and varying shapes in an almost concentric pattern to achieve color rhythms that activate the composition, injecting a virtual pulse or
