  6. Helen Frankenthaler: The Joy of Color

    —Helen Frankenthaler  Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) was a pivotal figure in postwar American art as she adopted the principles of gestural abstraction and pioneered the techniques of “stain” painting, influencing a generation Her unique contribution was a “soak-stain” technique: She laid unprimed canvas on the floor, poured thinned paint directly onto the surface, and allowed pools of color to linger and flow.   On view are loans from the Sarofim Foundation Collection as well as a recent landmark bequest: Venetian Story.   7. Color, Scent, and Memory: Rienzi’s Gardens 1954–1999

    Themes of color, scent, and memory offer a sense of cohesion throughout the gardens, while distinct formal areas provide a sense of individual space. Rienzi opened to the public in 1999, and ever since, the gardens have provided Houston the opportunity to witness a living collection of plants, flowers, trees, and sensory moments. The gardens showcase the beauty of flowers, foliage, and sculptural forms on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, utilizing the natural ravines and towering trees to create a sense of dynamism and grandeur.

  8. Fear and Wonder: Sublime Landscapes on Paper—Selections from the Museum’s Collection

    The prints and drawings in Fear and Wonder, drawn from the MFAH collection, showcase a range of sublime evocations. In the 18th century, philosopher Edmund Burke wrote of the power of the sublime in nature as capable of filling the mind with astonishment accompanied by a degree of dread. Today, the concept of the sublime remains a strong and fertile force in contemporary art with new and expanded definitions, including critiques of human ecological destruction.

    Reflection and Enlightenment features a selection of Chinese Buddhist gilt bronzes from the collection of Jane and Leopold Swergold. Offering a rich introduction to the iconography of Buddhist devotional objects, these sculptures span the 3rd to 9th century, from the Southern and Northern dynasties period to the Sui and Tang dynasties. 

  10. The Design Reformation in Europe, 1845–1915: Selections from the Museum’s Collection

    New production methods arising from the Industrial Revolution led to a debate on the relationship between design and industry. Industrialization brought new machines that could create a variety of objects to satisfy the needs of an affluent middle class. The belief that good, moral design could come only from a good and moral society led the Arts and Crafts movement to look for inspiration from historical English sources.
