Feb 22, 2017 - Evolution of a Sculptor After working as a model-maker in film and television in the United States and London, Mueck shifted his focus to the fine arts in the mid-1990s; among his first sculptures was a figure of the young Pinocchio You may find yourself identifying with a young mother, contemplating her newborn daughter. Or the adolescent boy who crouches down to peer into a mirror. A self-portrait that is nearly four times larger than life-sized, Mask II demonstrates the subtle play of realities that characterize much of Mueck’s work.

Raqib Shaw: Ballads of East and West
“I am a spectator, yet at the same time, I am a player.” He paints with porcupine quills and fine needles to render the precise details of delicate flowers or distant mountains, which are outlined in embossed gold. Born in India in 1974, Shaw spent most of his childhood in the Valley of Kashmir—a beautiful yet long-disputed territory marked by turmoil. On a trip to London in 1993, he fell in love with the Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery. He eventually moved to London in 1988 to study art and has lived there ever since.

Artists in Dialogue | Alexis Pye and Mitchell Reece
A. L. Ballard; Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Pye is a Round 16 Lawndale Artist Studio Program Participant for the 2022–23 season. Mitchell Reece (born 1990, Houston), lives and works in Houston as a graphic designer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist. She explores the tradition of painting as a way to express the Black body outside of its social constructs, to evoke playfulness, wonder, and Blackness, as well as the joys amidst adversity.

Performance | Arts of Korea Gallery Celebration
Live music and performances include a traditional Korean dance by the group Yeonhui Connect IEUL from Seoul, South Korea. They perform yeonhui, a traditional Korean art form that blends music, dance, acrobatics, and theater. The group connects with modern audiences by reinterpreting traditions from a contemporary perspective. During the intermission, enjoy a tour of the gallery with Chuqi Min, PhD candidate in art history, Rice University. Yeonhui Connect IEUL is a contemporary Korean traditional performing arts group that reimagines the excitement, energy, and spirit of traditional yeonhui for today’s audiences.
