Study Abroad in Ireland
Discover inspiration in the wild beauty of the Burren in western Ireland. This two-week residential study trip at the Burren College of Art offers students and artists their own studio space, immersive class excursions into the landscape, and opportunities to connect with farmers, poets, artisans, and philosophers.
Participants begin by exploring the history, geography, and nature of the area, then learn more about the unique ecosystem of the Burren. Local field trips take students from ancient caves to towering cliffs, as well as to the Aran Islands and Galway. Lectures and tours from local artists, historians, and folklorists color the vibrant, deep, and fascinating story of this remarkable part of the world.
Under the tutelage of Liv Johnson, department head of printmaking, students develop a series of works on paper inspired by the landscapes, culture, and people of Ireland. Demonstrations are given in printmaking methods that are receptive to sketching on site and spontaneous mark making; no previous printmaking experience is required. By creating multiples, students are able to experiment in varying colors, values, and other design elements while also working with composition development through collage and mixed media. These initial works on paper serve as the foundation for finished pieces to be completed after the trip and exhibited at the Glassell School in fall 2026.
