Film Series | German Punk @50

Celebrate Germany's historic punk scene with films chronicling the rise of self-expression and nonconformity.
In 1988, the East German state film studio produced the only documentary on the country’s rock and punk scene. whisper & SHOUT sold more than a million tickets upon release, largely due to young people’s eagerness to see their favorite bands onscreen, and to find out what escaped the censors. The filmmaker’s team hit the road across East Germany not only to film live performances, but also to interview teenage fans about their place in the subculture, their prospects for the future, and the targets of their rebellion.
