Since the 1980s, the video store has been a desperately necessary space for film culture. Ten years in the making, Videoheaven—inspired by Daniel Herbert’s 2014 book Videoland: Movie Culture at the American Video Store—uses the story of the neighborhood video shop to consider wider, changing social histories. Sourced from more than 200 films, TV shows, commercials, news reports, and related media, with narration by Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), the documentary traces how the rise of 1980s VHS transformed the way people watch movies, creating a community carried on by today’s arthouse audiences. Special guests who staffed Houston’s video stores are expected to attend the screening.
