Born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, saxophonist Illinois Jacquet first came to prominence when his solo on Lionel Hampton’s 1942 recording of “Flying Home” innovated the sound of jazz tenor and ushered in rhythm and blues. Filmed in stylish black-and-white between 1988 and 1990, Texas Tenor is an affectionate cinematic portrait of the legendary musician that blends performances, behind-the-scenes footage, archival material, and interviews with Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Sonny Rollins, Buddy Tate, and others. Most importantly, the charismatic showman is seen performing with astonishing feeling and musical inventiveness. Join us for this celebration of a hometown jazz hero.
