Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise

Directed by Robert Mugge
(USA, 1980, digital)

Introduced by musician Damon Choice

This documentary portrait of mythic free-jazz innovator Sun Ra (1914–1993) captures performances by Ra and his Arkestra in three cities. Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise intercuts the musical interludes with footage of band members at their shared house in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood and Ra relaying his poetic proclamations about vibrations, myth, and mystery while standing among Egyptian artifacts at the Penn Museum.
