Fifty years ago, punk emerged on the global scene as an ethos built on self-expression and nonconformity, shaping culture on both sides of the Atlantic. American punk influenced Germany's scene, and in Mexico, the ideals became a voice for the marginalized. This fall, eight Goethe-Instituts across the United States and Mexico mark the anniversary with exhibitions, films, concerts, and conversations that tie Germany's scene to the rest of the world.
As part of the celebration, the MFAH has partnered with the Goethe-Institut Houston to present films highlighting the revolutionary music, personalities, and DIY styles while seeking a transatlantic answer to one question: "What does punk mean now?"
