Set against the social and political shifts in Kerala in the 1970s, John Abraham’s last film follows Purushan as comes across a dead body in the road, determined to a suicide. He begins a journey, alongside a cast of characters, to inform the victim’s mother about the circumstances of her son’s death. Informed by the political history of the Indian state, the film is a testament to its own production by the Odessa Collective, who would collectively fund projects through small donations across villages and cast non-traditional actors in a script that would develop as the project progressed. The result is a truly grassroots film from conception to exhibition that exemplifies the Indian Parallel Cinema movement, lovingly restored by The Film Heritage Foundation (Days and Nights in the Forest) for its 40th Anniversary.
