For National Poetry Month in April, Houston Poet Laureate Reyes Ramirez hosts a series of poetry workshops in the MFAH galleries. Reyes leads each session with thoughtful writing prompts that respond to specific galleries of contemporary works in the Kinder Building. Participants have the opportunity to ask writing questions of the presenter and engage in creative communal collaboration with the group. No previous writing experience is necessary.

About the Speakers
Reyes Ramirez is the 2025–2027 Houston Poet Laureate, as well as a writer, educator, curator, and translator of Mexican and Salvadoran descent. He authored the short story collection The Book of Wanderers, a 2023 Young Lions Fiction Award finalist, and the poetry collection El Rey of Gold Teeth. His latest curatorial project, The Houston Artist Speaks Through Grids, explores the use of grids in contemporary Houston art, literature, history, and politics. Reyes has been honored with awards and fellowships including the 2025 Anne Frydman Translation Prize from the Hopkins Review, a 2024 Speculative Play and Just Futurities Fellowship, and the Warhol Foundation’s Idea Fund.
