In auteur Hou Hsiao-hsien’s stylish and seductive submersion into the techno-scored neon nightlife of Taipei, this episodic, romance-tinged story stars Shu Qi (Resurrection) as an aimless bar hostess drifting away from her possessive boyfriend and toward a suave, sensitive gangster. Structured as a flashback, Millennium Mambo is drenched in club lights, ecstatic endorphin-rush exhilaration, and a nagging undercurrent of urban ennui.
