This new film revisits the music, and reappraises the politics, of legendary jazz trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong. Drawing on scrapbooks, home recordings, and diaries (read by hip-hop artist Nas), documentarian and journalist Sacha Jenkins uses a creative storytelling style to trace Armstrong’s life and career from New Orleans to global success. Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues addresses the musician’s experiences with segregation and the criticism he faced for not actively participating in the civil-rights movement.
