Art historian Pepe Karmel delivers the lecture “Picasso in the Berggruen Collection: Between Form and Desire,” which approaches Pablo Picasso’s diverse body of work through the lenses of Symbolism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Classicism. Karmel’s expertise as a Picasso scholar informs the discussion about Picasso’s practice of working simultaneously in multiple styles.

This year’s Peter Lotz Memorial Lecture is held in conjunction with the exhibition Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen.

This program is the Museum’s annual Peter Lotz Lecture. Endowed by Merrianne Timko in memory of her late husband, the Peter Lotz Lecture is a dedicated series devoted to the history of Modernism across all disciplines represented by the MFAH collections.

About the Speaker
Pepe Karmel is professor at the department of art history, New York University. He is the author of Picasso and the Invention of Cubism, and Looking at Picasso. Karmel has written widely on art for museum catalogs as well as The New York Times, Art in America, and other publications. He has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions, including Jackson Pollock (MoMA, 1998) and Dialogues with Picasso (Museo Picasso Málaga, 2020). Karmel was the associate curator of Museo Picasso Málaga.
