Seungmee Yang, curator at the National Museum of Korea, presents a talk on the MFAH Arts of Korea Gallery, highlighting major loans and gifts associated with Dongwon Lee Hong-Kun, Sujeong Park Byung-Rae, and the Lee Kun-Hee Collection. She examines the significance of these contributions to the presentation of Korean art in Houston as well as the gallery’s role as a platform for international engagement with Korea’s artistic heritage.
 
In addition, Yang discusses the Lee Kun-Hee Collection, donated by the family of late Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-Hee to the Korean government in 2021; and the exhibition Korean National Treasures: 2,000 Years of Art from the Lee Kun-Hee Collection, which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago in March. She draws connections between the MFAH installations and this international touring exhibition, exploring the curatorial framing of the collection and its implications for presenting Joseon-period art within global museum contexts.

About the Speaker
Seungmee Yang is a curator in the exhibition division at the National Museum of Korea, where she has worked since 2011. She holds an MA in art history and archaeology from Seoul National University, and she has contributed to major exhibitions in Korea and internationally.
