Over more than three decades, Hew Locke has used photography, drawing, sculpture, and assemblages to explore the histories of colonialism across five continents—filtered through present-day realities of global trade, migration, and diaspora. In this conversation with Brittany Webb, curator of modern and contemporary art, Locke discusses the material, art historical, and geographic influences on view in the exhibition Hew Locke: Passages. Topics span his research in major museums to his travels between the United Kingdom, Guyana, and beyond.

About the Artist
Hew Locke (born 1959) is a London-based sculptor. His work has been shown in exhibitions across Britain and the United States, including Gilt for the facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; The Procession, a large-scale installation for Tate Britain; and What have we here? at the British Museum.
