Johannes Vermeer: New Light on an Old Master
Speaker: art historian Sabry Amroussi
Famed Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) left the world a small but legendary oeuvre of only about 35 paintings, which are often loaded with hidden meaning and symbolism. In 2023, the major retrospective Vermeer opens at the Rijksmuseum, the national museum of the Netherlands. With loans from all over the world, Vermeer promises to be the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the 17th-century master.
In this lecture, Sabry Amroussi—who is closely involved in mounting the exhibition—provides a look at Vermeer’s life story along with the latest insights into deciphering the artist’s work.

About the Speaker
Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer based in Amsterdam. He specializes in 17th-century Dutch art, the work of Rembrandt van Rijn, and the Jewish history of Amsterdam.
