Each year HCAF pairs two filmmakers whose work speaks across themes, influence, or character. This time, it’s newcomer Jinho Myung — named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 Faces of Independent Film 2025” and already hailed as “the enfant terrible of the Safdie Brothers and Andrew Bujalski” (Festival Entrevues) — in conversation with the “godfather of mumblecore” himself, Andrew Bujalski. Together they’ll trade notes on small budgets, the honesty of discomfort, and what it means to embody the spirit of the moment.

Jinho Myung is a filmmaker living in New York. His parents are from Korea, but he was born and raised in the Los Angeles area. He is interested in personal-documentary filmmaking and diasporic storytelling. Softshell is his debut feature film and premiered at the New/Next Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Prix Jury Award at the 39th Entrevues Belfort Film Festival.
Andrew Bujalski is an American film director, screenwriter, and actor, who has been called the "godfather of mumblecore." He is the son of an artist-turned-businesswoman, Sheila Dubman, and a businessman, Edmund Bujalski. Andrew studied film at Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, where the Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman was his thesis advisor.
