After fleeing Germany in 1933 following the rise of the Nazi Regime, Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) returns to his home country for the first time in 1949 to face the country’s division following the fall of fascism. Accompanied by his daughter (Academy Award-nominated Sandra Hüller), the two travel from the U.S. dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar to face fractions within their country and family. Fatherland, which won Best Director at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, followed director Pawel Pawlikowski’s Academy Award-winning Ida and three time Academy Award-nominated Cold War as meditations on the personal impacts of World War II on the livelihoods of those trying to find their place in a world that has long abandoned them.
