This engrossing, genre-defying film (executive-produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna) profiles the provocative Los Angeles–based, Chicano artist collective ASCO. From 1972 to 1987, the members merged activism and artistic practice as they challenged the lack of representation in the mainstream art world, Hollywood, and the news media. With an audacious storytelling style, the film combines nonfiction and fiction, including archival commentary from the original members and collaborative film works made with the next generation of Latinx artists. ASCO: Without Permission boldly reimagines what is possible in cinema and art while celebrating an iconoclastic group that was far ahead of its time. This program is presented in collaboration with the Houston Latino Film Festival, which celebrates its 10th edition in 2026.
