The second film of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colors trilogy, White is the most playful and the grittiest. A Polish immigrant hairdresser (Zbigniew Zamachowski) living in France opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues for divorce and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. Chronicling the man’s elaborate revenge plot, White manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie of twisted love.
