This fascinating documentary about Texas-born author Patricia Highsmith (1921–1995) focuses on her quest for love and her troubled identity. Illustrating her distinctive voice are scenes from movies based on her novels, such as Carol and The Talented Mr. Ripley, as well as Strangers on a Train (screening at the MFAH this weekend).
Fort Worth relatives share insights about Highsmith’s early life, and actress Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) narrates diary excerpts for a candid, first-person perspective. Scholars, former lovers, and contemporaries contribute memories of the enigmatic and strong-willed writer who was forced to lead a double life, hiding her lesbian love affairs from her family and the public.
