2022 Ruth K. Shartle Lecture Series
This lecture, open to the public, is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Philip Guston Now. Admission is free with your ticket.
Across a career spanning 50 years, Philip Guston never stopped questioning the place of the artist in society. His work expresses a profound humanism, defined equally by themes that touched on what Guston (1913–1980) called the “brutality of the world” and his deep commitment to the joy of painting.
Celebrating the opening of the long-awaited retrospective Philip Guston Now, this discussion looks at why Guston’s work continues to resonate today.
