FOR BLOG POST ONLY - Velazquez, Kitchen Maid

Attributed to Diego Velázquez, Kitchen Maid, c. 1620, oil on canvas, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harris Masterson III.

One of the Museum’s biggest announcements of 2018 involves a 17th-century painting that, for years, was on view at Rienzi with a label that read “In the style of Diego Velázquez.” After extensive conservation and research, Zahira Bomford, senior conservator of paintings, concluded that Kitchen Maid is attributable to the Spanish master himself.

Hit “play” below to watch Bomford discuss Kitchen Maid, on view on the second floor of the Beck Building—alongside a new label that reads “Attributed to Diego Velázquez.”
