Frida Kahlo’s art has resonated with millions of individuals around the globe. This exhibition tells the story of how she became one of the world’s most influential artists. 

Devoted to Frida Kahlo’s life and legacy, Frida: The Making of an Icon premieres at the MFAH in January 2026. This monumental exhibition features more than 30 works by the legendary Mexican artist and 120 by five generations of artists she inspired.

Practically unknown to mainstream audiences during her lifetime (1907–1954), Kahlo has been enshrined since the mid-1970s as the only female artist whose instant audience recognition and mass appeal rival those of male artists Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.

Since the 1980s, retrospective exhibitions around the world have explored Kahlo’s artistic production and contributions to 20th-century Modernism. By contrast, Frida: The Making of an Icon is the first major exploration of the artist’s transformation from a relatively unknown local painter to a universal icon and global brand. Departing from the traditional retrospective format, the exhibition revolves around a selection of Kahlo’s masterworks, memorabilia, and documents from her archives, as well as a vast array of works from artists across artistic and social movements who were inspired by her practice. A special gallery addresses the status of Kahlo’s legacy as a pop-culture figure.

The exhibition reveals how the different facets of Kahlo’s complex persona[lity], which she so carefully crafted and projected, were adapted again and again over her decades-long transformation into an icon. As a result, her image became subsumed within the desires, fears, and hopes of artists and activists who transformed it into innovative proposals that transcend their source of inspiration while commenting on pressing issues.”

Le Jardinier at MFAH honors Frida Kahlo’s art and enduring spirit in two special menu items. The “Trazo Rojo” cocktail layers chamomile-infused mezcal with orange hibiscus. The “In Bloom” dessert features guava cream and pineapple compote with hibiscus gelée on a warm piloncillo crumble.

Dedicada a la vida y el legado de Frida Kahlo, Frida: The Making of an Icon se estrena en el MFAH en enero de 2026. Esta exposición monumental presenta más de 30 obras de la legendaria artista mexicana y 120 obras de cinco generaciones de artistas a quienes inspiró.

Prácticamente desconocida para el público general durante su vida (1907–1954), Kahlo ha sido consagrada desde mediados de la década de 1970 como la única artista femenina cuyo reconocimiento inmediato y atractivo popular están a la par de artistas masculinos como Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso y Andy Warhol.

Desde la década de 1980, exposiciones retrospectivas en todo el mundo han explorado la producción artística de Kahlo y sus contribuciones al modernismo del siglo XX. En contraste, Frida: The Making of an Icon, es la primera exhibición que explora a fondo la transformación de Frida Kahlo, de una artista relativamente desconocida a un ícono universal y una marca global. Alejándose del formato retrospectivo tradicional, la exposición gira en torno a una selección de obras maestras de Kahlo, objetos personales y documentos de sus archivos, así como una vasta colección de obras de artistas pertenecientes a distintos movimientos artísticos y sociales que se inspiraron en su práctica. Además, una galería especial se enfoca en el estatus del legado de Kahlo como figura de la cultura popular.
