The Latin Wave film festival returns to Houston for the third year with a particularly strong lineup of recent films from Latin America. The cinematographic landscapes of six countries are presented here through a selection of eight films, all of which garnered awards at prestigious international film festivals, including Cannes, Rotterdam, Toronto, and Venice. Moreover, five of these films represented their nations in the bid to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Latin American cinema has undergone a major revitalization that took root in Argentina 10 years ago and has since grown across the region, extending to Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela, and other countries where the implementation of government incentive programs, the adoption of film laws, and the proliferation of film schools have fostered the emergence of this vibrant and distinctive film canon. As the 2008 Latin Wave program—with a significant representation by female directors, as well as first- and second-time filmmakers—bears witness, this phenomenon is not a passing phase, but rather a true cultural renacimiento (renaissance). As in prior years, all films are Houston premieres, and the majority will be introduced by the filmmaker or by a key member of the cast or crew. After the screenings, these guests will participate in Q&A sessions.

El festival Latin Wave regresa a Houston en su tercera edición con una cartelera particularmente sólida de películas recientes de América Latina. Las ocho películas seleccionadas —todas galardonadas en algunos de los festivales de mayor prestigio internacional incluyendo el de Cannes, Rótterdam, Toronto o Venecia— presentan el paisaje cinematográfico de seis países latinoamericanos. Más aún, cinco de éstas fueron escogidas como propuestas oficiales de sus respectivos países al Oscar a la mejor película extranjera.

El cine en América Latina ha experimentado una revitalización que, desde sus orígenes en la Argentina hace ya diez años, se ha esparcido por toda la región. En Colombia, México, Uruguay y Venezuela —entre tantos otros países— los incentivos gubernamentales, la ratificación de legislación cinematográfica y la proliferación de escuelas de cine han engendrado un canon fílmico vibrante y distintivo. El programa de la presente edición del festival Latin Wave —el cual incluye una amplia representación de directoras además de noveles cineastas quienes presentan su primer o segundo largometraje— es prueba de que, más que una fase pasajera, el fenómeno es un verdadero renacimiento cultural. Tal como en años anteriores, éste es el estreno en Houston de todos los filmes, la mayoría de los cuales serán presentados por el cineasta o bien por un integrante clave de su reparto o equipo técnico. Estos invitados participarán de una sesión de preguntas y respuestas luego de cada proyección.
