Explore Approaches to Painting on Canvas This art activity represents a beautiful example of the Black aesthetic and a wonderful contribution to contemporary art in the United States by a Black artist. It’s a fun way for children to experiment with pushing boundaries in art. The handy how-to guide and video were developed by MFAH teaching artist Melissa Aytenfisu.

    The MFAH is the debut venue for Olga de Amaral: To Weave a Rock. Olga de Amaral: To Weave a Rock | July 25–September 19, 2021 • Included with general admission. Advance timed tickets recommended. Her radical experimentation with color, form, material, composition, and space transforms weaving from a flat design element into an architectural component that defies the confines of any genre or medium.

  9. Jasper Johns: 100 Variations on a Theme

    The MFAH hosts the debut presentation of Jasper Johns: 100 Variations on a Theme. The exhibition centers on a series of 100 unique prints the artist made in 2015 over the course of 10 days in his Connecticut studio. As a basis for this series, Johns etched his palm imprint and American Sign Language symbols onto a single intaglio plate, and then proceeded to transform that image 100 times, using string, stenciled numbers, and leaves from  Jasper Johns: 100 Variations on a Theme | September 29, 2019–February 16, 2020 This exhibition is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
