Houston Artists Select: Selections from the Museum’s Collection June 13–October 1, 2017

Houston Artists Select presents 20th- and 21st-century prints from the Museum’s permanent collection selected by five local artists: Keliy Anderson-Staley, Jamal Cyrus, Laura Gutierrez, Joseph Havel, and Vincent Valdez. Well respected for their work in the realms of sculpture, photography, painting, installation, drawing, and dance, these artists call upon such artistic practices to explore the communicative value of printmaking.

The exhibition examines these practices through the following themes: the architecture of memory, the choreography of minimalism, the expressive potential of portraiture, the political promise of the medium, and innovation in mechanical technique. Louise Bourgeois, Matt Magee, Robert Mangold, Man Ray, Ed Ruscha, Betye Saar, Richard Serra, and Ben Shahn are among the artists represented.

Houston Artists Select coincides with PrintHouston 2017, the sixth biennial series of events coordinated by the Houston arts organization PrintMatters. PrintHouston promotes original prints, the artists who create them, and the people who collect them.
