Dostoevsky’s short story becomes a ravishing romantic reverie in incandescent black and white. Marcello Mastroianni is new in town and falls in love with Maria Schell amidst the fog-shrouded Tuscan canal city of Livorno. Visconti wrote the male lead for Mastroianni in order to “help him enlarge the range of his movie characters.” The resulting tale of all-consuming love and loss is a swooning dream vision completed entirely on sets built inside the studios of Cinecittà.
