François Ozon (8 Women; Summer of ‘85) takes a modern approach in ad apting Albert Camus’s classic 1942 novel of existential ennui. Meursa ult (Benjamin Voisin), a clerk working in Algiers during the French colonia l occupation, finds his life upended by his mother’s death. Unable to express grief, his detachment carries over to all aspects of his life, fro m his tentative romance with Marie (Rebecca Marder) to his indifference tow ard professional advancement. As Meursault is swept up in a cycle of escala ting reprisals by his neighbors, tensions come to a head when he faces a mu rder charge. Filmed in sensuous black-and-white, The Stranger is s imultaneously faithful to the text and dedicated to discovering fresh persp ectives in the margins.

Rich Levy was executive director for 31 years of Houston's Inprint, a leading literary organization and author showcase. His poetry collections include Why Me? and the chapbook One or Two Lights. A member of the Texas Institute of Letters, he serves o n the MFAH film subcommittee and is a jazz obsessive.
