Jazz on Film, Umetsugu Inoue: Japan’s Music Man
The Stormy Man (a.k.a. The Man Who Started a Storm)
Charismatic singer Yujiro Ishihara stars as a young ruffian aspiring to be a drummer in Tokyo’s Ginza jazz world. Little known internationally, director Umetsugu Inoue’s The Stormy Man was one of Japan’s biggest hits of the late 1950s. Young audiences cheered to Ishihara’s lyrics “Ore wa dorama, yakuza na dorama” (“I’m a drummer, a no-good drummer!”).
