Quino (Pedro Armendáriz) is an indigenous fisherman in a humble village. His life changes forever when he discovers a lucid pearl at the bottom of the sea. In a cruel twist of fate, the valuable find turns out to be more of a curse than a godsend.

The pearl inspires only greed and forces Quino and his family to flee a dangerous merchant (Fernando Wagner). The story is based on the eponymous novella by John Steinbeck, who also cowrote the screenplay. Lyrical filmmaker Emilio Fernández adapts Steinbeck’s tale of treacherous human passions with immense emotional power. Legendary cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa’s images capture the family’s tragedy with affecting sensitivity. La perla won the International Award for Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival in 1947 and a Golden Globe award for Best Cinematography in 1949.
