QFest: The Annual Houston International LGBTQ Film Festival
The Heiresses (Las herederas)
Chela (Ana Brun) and Chiquita (Margarita Irun)—together for more than 30 years—are from wealthy families in Asunción, Paraguay. When financial misfortune prompts them to sell their inherited possessions, and their debts lead to Chiquita being imprisoned on fraud charges, the introverted Chela is forced to face a new reality. Driving for the first time in years, Chela begins to provide a taxi service for the women in her neighborhood and experiences a newfound confidence.
At the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival, The Heiresses won the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize, and Brun’s nuanced performance as Chela earned the Silver Bear for best actress. The film won the Best Director Award at the Cartagena Film Festival, and the Grand Prize in the International Competition at the Jeonju Film Festival (Korea). It also appeared in film festivals in the Ukraine, Australia, USA, UK, and Ireland.
