Against the backdrop of World War I, the women at the Paridier farm handle the workload while the men are at the front. The matriarch (Nathalie Bay) hires teenage orphan Francine (Iris Bry, in a fine screen debut) to help, and together the women start to modernize the farm. But complicated emotions are stirred up when the men return. Cinematographer Caroline Champetier (Holy Motors) evokes the beauty of the French countryside with a painterly approach.

“With narrative restraint and a lapidary visual style, Beauvois opens up this isolated world with stirring emotional force.” —Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

“A serious-minded and . . . rather powerful portrait of women getting by in a world where all the men are either gone or gone mad.” —Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter
