Visconti’s Neorealist Sicilian masterpiece focuses on the fishing village of Aci Trezza which the filmmaker recalls “felt like Ulysses’ island, an island of adventure and fervent passions, immovable and proud against the waters of the Ionian Sea.” A fisherman’s budding leadership of the local labor force threatens the price-fixing schemes of wholesalers all too willing to put down an incipient rebellion. Rather than stress any ideological plan for future reform, Visconti instead centers on the cyclical, timeless life of the village. His depth of field unites the interior and exterior words in his depiction of the fishermen’s society.
