Armchair Travel: Exhibition on Screen
“Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse” from the Royal Academy of Arts, London
Saturday, August 11, 2018:
Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and perhaps the most important painter of gardens in the history of art—but he was not alone. Artists like Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Camille Pissarro, and John Singer Sargent all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These greats, along with many other famous names, figured in an innovative 2016 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
From exhibition walls to the beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny, Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse takes a magical journey. Discover how Monet and his contemporaries cultivated gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design, and utopian ideas. Passionate curators and garden enthusiasts reveal how these remarkable artists helped spark the public’s enduring fascination with gardens.
Following the August 11 screening, stick around for a concert by the Houston Chamber Choir. The performance is free with Museum admission!
