Opening-Day Lecture “Making an Icon”
Presented by Lisa Volpe, associate curator of photography
Made for consumption in magazines and advertising, fashion photography—like fashion itself—is a reactive genre. To hold our attention, it is perpetually shifting shape in the face of social, political, and economic changes. In this genre characterized by rapid change, how does an image become an icon?
On the opening day of the exhibition Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, curator Lisa Volpe explores one of history’s most iconic fashion photographs: Richard Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants.
