A landmark of Cuban and feminist cinema, One Way or Another charts the rocky romance between a teacher and a factory worker amid the interplay of race, gender, and class in Fidel Castro’s Cuba. Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez’s radical blend of drama and documentary is the first feature directed by a Cuban woman. As a feminist, revolutionary, and Black woman, Gómez (1943–1974) offered the world a unique voice that was silenced by her death from an asthma attack while the film was in postproduction. Her colleague Tomás Gutiérrez Alea finished the movie, and it was released in 1977 but not in the United States.
