In the realm of art documentaries, The Mystery of Picasso is one of the all-time greats. The screen itself becomes the artist’s canvas: Pablo Picasso creates, and sometimes obliterates, 20 works of art, ranging from playful black-and-white sketches to CinemaScope color murals—works that evolve in minutes through the magic of stop-motion animation. The Mystery of Picasso received the Prix du Jury at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, and in 1984 the French government declared the film a national treasure.

As filmmaker Henri-Georges Clouzot (1907–1977) promised Picasso (1881–1973): “When we are all dead, you and me and everyone, the film will still continue to be projected.”
