“Soul of a Nation” Film Series
Friday, May 22, 2020:
A young philosophy professor (Seret Scott) and her painter husband (Bill Gunn) are at personal and professional crossroads. When they leave New York City for a summer in the country, they experience a reawakening, both together and separately. Tragically, Losing Ground was never released theatrically.
Now digitally restored at the initiative of the filmmaker’s daughter, Losing Ground looks and sounds as bracing and complex now as when it was released. Zoé Whitley, cocurator of the exhibition Soul of a Nation, told Frieze that her “artistic hero” is director Kathleen Collins.
