This new documentary about artist Julian Schnabel profiles his early years in Texas, the beginning of his professional career in New York in the late 1970s, and his subsequent rise to superstar status on the international art scene. Schnabel (born 1951) moved into filmmaking with 1995’s Basquiat and has since directed four other features, including Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Julian Schnabel: A Private Portrait presents material from Schnabel’s personal archive; intimate scenes in his studio; and observations from his children and luminaries such as Laurie Anderson, Bono, Mary Boone, Jeff Koons, and Al Pacino.
