Celebrated photographer Bert Stern captures the performances, people, and setting during one Saturday of the Newport Jazz Festival. For his one and only film, Stern teamed up with jazz aficionado Aram Avakian to create a breezy and colorful document of great jazz performers and a certain slice of American life in the 1950s.

Jazz on a Summer’s Day features fantastic performances from an unbelievable, all-star lineup including Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Anita O’Day, Sonny Stitt, and Dinah Washington. Interspersed throughout are Stern’s photographic observations of the scene’s crowds, streets, beaches, and boats.

“An audio-visual treat, a moment to savor from the Indian summer of jazz.” —The Guardian

“Sixty years on, Jazz on a Summer’s Day remains a timeless venture, forever memorable.” —Mojo Magazine
